Uplift Somalia hosted a workshop titled Somali Youth and Digital Job Pathways, delivered by Mustaf Abdullahi Muse, Digital Transformation and E-Governance Innovation Advisor at the Office of the Prime Minister. The session explored how digital transformation is creating new opportunities for Somali youth and highlighted the digital skills most needed in today’s labour market. Participants received guidance on career readiness, emerging job pathways, and how to position themselves for opportunities in both local and global digital markets. The workshop is part of Uplift Somalia’s ongoing commitment to preparing young people for meaningful career and leadership opportunities.

On 20 November 2025, Uplift Somalia organised a skills-focused workshop that brought together youth and university students eager to understand how digital transformation is shaping the future of work in Somalia. The training was delivered by Mustaf Abdullahi Muse, an expert in digital transformation and e-governance innovation.

Purpose of the Workshop

The workshop aimed to provide students with practical knowledge on how today’s digital economy is evolving and what skills are needed to participate in new job pathways. The session helped youth understand how to position themselves competitively in an increasingly digital labour market. It also highlighted how digital skills can help young people overcome the high unemployment rate facing Somali youth today by opening access to job opportunities both locally and globally. The discussion covered the kinds of digital skills that lead to online work opportunities, the freelance pathways available for youth, and the platforms where they can earn income if they develop digital skills in demand.

Key Topics Covered

The workshop explored:

  •  how digital transformation is reshaping opportunities for Somali youth
  • the digital skills most needed in local and international job markets
  • trends in remote work, freelancing, and tech-enabled careers
  • how to develop practical skills that increase employability
  • career readiness and building pathways into the digital economy

Participants gained clarity on the realities of digital work and the mindset required to prepare for new and emerging opportunities.

Practical Guidance for Youth

Mustaf provided students with actionable advice, including how to:

  • choose relevant digital skills and learning pathways
  • build a personal portfolio or experience through small projects
  • improve their ability to compete for global digital jobs
  • navigate new opportunities created by technology and innovation

The session encouraged students to take an active role in shaping their futures by learning intentionally and staying adaptable.
